CompassPoint Mentorship

Synopsis

CompassPoint Mentorship is an organization that connects high school students and alumni together as a means of guidance. Alumni act as mentors, bringing their experience to the table and helping current students with the nuances of high school, be it college applications, public speaking, meeting skills, classes, and more. Founders Carl Shan and Kavya Shankar called on me to not only develop a new website, but also design it as well. Consequently, my services included the whole shebang—from design all the way to WordPress integration. Indeed, Carl Shan summarizes the quality of my work by explaining:

Details

As an expanding and promising organization, CompassPoint Mentorship required more than an average website; in fact, among many other customizations, I accomplished the following:

  • The Google Maps API was integrated to display branches of CompassPoint Mentorship across the world. Each branch has a corresponding marker that, when clicked, directs the user to its respective page. This not only involved the JavaScript-based API, but also the static maps library as a fallback (try disabling JavaScript on the page and refresh).
  • A front page JavaScript feature slider was added (custom-written and only 2.5 KB minified) to showcase mentor-mentee (alumni-student) meetings and other activities.
  • Custom user permissions were added for branch-specific pages, as these must be editable only by their respective branch leader.
  • WordPress shortcodes for the grid, MailChimp subscription form, contact form, and more were added to allow for the highest level of content control.
  • Slideshare module embedding, social media buttons, and recent tweets constitute additional customizations for the site.

In terms of my reliability accomplishing this task, Carl notes:
